ACARREANDO AMERICA
Francisco Letelier
Created 2019
This work is unframed and meant to hang as a banner or flag. It has a top hem and hangs from a wooden dowel.
A stylized map of the Americas from Alaska and North Pole to the Antarctic Circle covers an image of a woman ‘Chola” wearing clothing typical of Andean countries - Peru and Bolivia. Patterns on her clothing refer to the extraction practices that now threaten all of us through environmental harm with depleted food sources, water scarcity and climate change. The work celebrates the lives and work of women throughout the Americas and in particular those who create enduring cultural practices and sustainable relationships to the earth and their children.
