BARN OWL, 2017
Deborah Gavel
Created in 2017. Oil and sterling silver leaf on canvas mounted on panel.
This portrait of a specific Barn Owl was created in honor of it's extraordinary expression of silent flight. Ms. Gavel has been working with the themes of Plant, Mineral and Animal since completing an artist-in-residence in the Redwood Forest in northern California in 2011. This owl is depicted in the space of transition from one world to another. A bird of the night, they occupy the liminal place, at the boundary between day and night, they are at the threshold of magic hour. Powerful medicine, this bird has the ability to see with extraordinary vision in the night.
