Created in 2016-17 in Albuquerque, NM. Oil, beeswax and 18 K gold leaf on canvas mounted on panel.

Process is an important part of the manner in which Ms. Gavel creates her work. Each piece is a meditation marked by time, multiple layers and shifting light. The gold leaf is reminiscent of the halos surrounding religious iconography and the mosaics of Ravenna, Italy. Inspired by a visit to Venice in 2013 and the medicine wheel of Native indigenous cultures, this body of work intends to honor the spirit of flight.

Deborah Gavel is an artist in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  She currently lives and works in a studio on historic Rt. 66.  She received an MA and an MFA in Painting from the University of New Mexico.
