"This image is about motion and a timeless setting. To use such a classic western image and isolate it in a modern sense is such a fun visual contrast. Illustrating with a strong color palate just promotes the energy. The initial line drawing is protected with masking and then I layer the black ink with the silver leaf over it giving a deeper dimension to the negative space. The cowboy and horse is done with color pencil that is blended to set the shadows and establish the highlights. The next step is to resolve the details and contrast with graphite pencil. Because this a large piece the scale really helps give it a sense of wonder."
