Machi = healer- Spiritual leader and Kultrun =ceremonial drum. The brave and embattled Mapuche people of Chile have been defending their lands and culture for centuries. In this image a Machi plays the drum for the healing of all people and cultures. Wearing a face mask the image reminds us that native and indigenous people, historically marginalized and subjected to inequality are now at greatest risk during a global pandemic. Nonetheless, their teachings and culture provide much needed examples of survival, endurance and strength.
