Maud is a tribute to Maud Wagner, the first female tattoo artist in the United States and an emblem of self-determination when women had few rights. Born in 1877, she began her adult life as a circus performer and went on to become one of the most famous stick and poke tattoo artists of her generation. The artist was attracted by Maud’s defiant expression and the magnificent illustrations stretched across her chest, up to her collarbone, and all over her arms.
