MOTHER EMMANUEL

Sonja Griffin Evans
Created 2015. This piece was inspired the week before the massacre of the 'South Carolina Nine' after Bible Study at Emanuel AME in Charleston, SC because of their skin color. Mother Emanuel was formed by both free and enslaved blacks. Like this historical African American Church, the mother dressed in bright yellow is a beacon of light, strength and love. She will continue to stand tall and abide in God and him in her, as she longs to preserve and protect the lives and freedom of her children for generations..
