The Future Past, Oaxaca: For centuries the indigenous people of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico have protected their autonomy from outside forces of colonialism, development, globalization. Oaxacan communities have successfully kept traditions going while maintaining their own identity. They don’t live in the past, far from it, they are always changing, in their own way and on their own terms. As their cooperative alliances and autonomous social structures grow, the world is understanding that their traditionally grown futuristic culture is not a thing of the past but a seed for the future that others can learn from and adhere to.
