"With this image of the butterfly it is not only a chance to play with scale, but also an opportunity to create and an artful almost modern presentation with all the color. Taking something that is relatively small and blowing it up to a large scale is very fun and impactful. The process takes several steps. Establishing the outline and defining the negative space is first. Then I mask off the butterfly and flower. The background here is done with layers of acrylic to form a dreamy almost otherworldly sense of place. All the color is done by blending and smoothing the color pencil and then resolving with a graphite pencil. By keeping things bright the viewer is almost seeing the color before the image.
