TEMPLE OF MANY SAPPHIRES
Deborah Gavel
Created 2015.
Part of a series of paintings: Plant, Mineral, Animal Medicine. The title of this piece is a reference to a healing space. Deborah Gavel is a layerist, a painter who loves the alchemy of painting, the surfaces of her original images have a sensual quality created with metallic leaf, oil, enamel, beeswax, and sometimes elements of 3-dimensions. The central leaf design in this piece is from a vintage Japanese stencil referencing the heart-shaped Paulownia tree leaf. As a reference to fertility, the tree produces thousands of tiny seeds suggested above each leaf in the pattern.
