THE THIRD COAST
Leonarda Boughton
This painting is a celebration of the Midwest. It's a nod to the bi-coastal attitude that everything in the middle is a wash. In a tongue and cheek sort of way, Boughton placed the Great Lakes at the very center of the world, with the wind blowing in from the East, arriving in a childlike and playful way. She talks about what it is to discover a new and foreign place, referencing the explorers of old.
